This is the last block of Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Quilt Block of the Week project for 2011.  It’s #53 Union Shield.

I’ve auditioned several different sashing fabrics and border fabrics.  These are just a few of them:

I’ve decided on the solid blue sashing strips and the blue Civil War Chronicles border as seen in the first picture on the right.    I’ve got to buy more of the Centennial Solids blue to complete the sashing and have ordered additional CW Chronicles fabric for the border and binding.

On The Quilt Show friendship triangles quilt,  I tried several different fabrics as borders.

Friendship Q audition

and I’ve decided on the second one with the floral outer border and that dark same blue for the inner border.  Fortunately I don’t have to buy any more fabric to finish this one so I will tackle finishing it first.

I’m also working on the Temecula Quilt Company’s 12 Days of Christmas quilt and we are to day 10.  Here are the last five 3 1/2” blocks I’ve finished.

blks 5 thru 10 12 days

Working with such small pieces of fabric – the nine patch pieces are all 1 1/4” square – can be a challenge.  To improve my accuracy, I slowed my sewing machine speed way down and I am pressing all the seams open.  I’m having so much fun!!!!! And so is Ranger,

sleep dining rm

Sleeping all day long in “his” dining room chair when his Papi (my Sweetie) isn’t using it.  He’s not living up to the “Rowdy” part of his name “Rowdy Ranger” much these days although every once in a while he’ll go crazy and zip around the house and out of his pet door to his screened-in patio like a cheetah.  Wish I had that much energy.

Oh well . . .

  1. All you blocks and quilts are "looking good." After the Cowboys disappointing game last night "when does baseball start?"

  2. Great progress!!
I like all of your border selections - congratualtions on being so close to finishes.
I can just inagine the cat racing out the door ;-)

  3. I wonder if you have any of my triangle squares in your Friendship Quilt??? I really enjoyed participating in that - sent in 228 blocks that I made during a snowstorm here in Alabama. I finished mine late this summer. I just started cutting the setting pieces for the Civil War blocks. I am going with the medallion idea. And I cannot believe how much fun the 12 Days are. I like the colors you've used in yours. Fun, fun, fun!

  4. How fantastic to be choosing borders. I like both of your choices. The floral border on the hst quilt is so pretty!!

  5. My goodness, your 2012 progress is phenomenal! I love the little 3 1/2 blocks! And, of course, the Civil War block is great! I agree with your choice of solid blue for the sashing. Can't wait to see the finished quilt top!

  6. Your little '2 Days of Christmas' blocks are looking so very sweet! I've made five so far, this mornings' effort, will try and get the reamining ones completed today too!
Great choices for your sashing and border fabric for your CW quilt, it looks amazing! I've yet to get that far, still have a few 'extra' ones to do!
Love the friendship triangles quilt too, wonderful happy feel to it, great border choice there too!!! Looks as though you are elbow high in quilts and blocks at the moment LOL!

  7. Congrats on your progress with the Civil War BOM! I loved all your fabrics choices for these blocks! Really like your border choices for your projects and those 12 days of Christmas blocks are absolutely darling! What a great start to 2012!

Hey, leave me a comment so I know that I'm not talking to just myself!
