I just celebrated my 63rd (egad!) birthday without any major trauma. Like Sweetie says, it is better than the alternative. Yep it is!<br />
<br />
In the last couple of months I developed a new passion – felted wool applique -- which proves you are never too old to learn. Presenting my first completed project, HO, HO, HO.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-IsppMe6XKaI/VMk8Pn8WZ2I/AAAAAAAAKtM/GTt79_vUqAI/s1600-h/ho%252520ho%252520ho%252520table%252520mat%25255B2%25255D.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="ho ho ho table mat" border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-PdEAhEaPV_Q/VMk8QOoIw1I/AAAAAAAAKtQ/E_udBTPmQUk/ho%252520ho%252520ho%252520table%252520mat_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="300" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="ho ho ho table mat" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My "masterpiece"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The pattern is from <a href="http://sewuniquecreations.com/">Sew Unique Creations</a>. It is supposed to have wool pennies around the outside but mine didn’t come out even so I left them off until I can figure out a solution. My stitching is not very consistent in spacing and length but I think that will get better with practice because I've never done a blanket stitch before.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/proxy/oZ-zRblg1dFh0twN9bZLLFe0H3KnwwxZJxCPoEanxONpT7qIevTFZirsMU9RnrR1MH9sqYZ4vq1AO3a13SGmHgB9w8fn9ZrGHuLx0vUVbZ9Ynww" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Larger Image" border="0" src="http://cas.createashoppeplus.com/~sewuniqu//images/168large.jpg" height="278" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pattern photo from Sew Unique Creations</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I’m currently working on two projects. The first is for Valentines Day, "<a href="http://www.granolagirl.com/woolkits.html">Hearts & Flowers" by Granola Girls</a>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.granolagirl.com/wool/Hearts%20&%20Flowers%20207.jpg" height="400" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="263" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pattern Cover</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I’ve got the wool pieces cut out and ready for placement and stitching onto the background.<br />
<br />
The second one is a pattern from <a href="http://www.threadsthatbindonline.com/190.html">Threads That Bind called "Gentle Breeze</a>". It is the sheep weather vane at the top of the pattern.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.threadsthatbindonline.com/images/190med.jpg" height="400" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="349" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pattern Cover for Gentle Breeze</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Here it is on my design board with the plastic overlay placed. I’m working on the tongues now.<br />

<br />
Have no fear, I have not forsaken quilt making, but have extended my interest to this needle craft. My Janome has been to the sewing machine hospital for an adjustment and cleaning so she is ready to hum.<br />
<br />
We in North Central Texas are enjoying a beautiful sun shining 80 degree day so my apologies to my snow covered New England readers. Let’s just keep on stitching snow or shine!<br />

There was a trend I noticed at the show, a larger number of New York Beauty or spiky type quilts. There has always been a few of the past years but not this many that I recall.<br />

The following quilt was not in the competition this year but it was by far my favorite. It was used in place of another quilt that ended up not making it to the show. I don’t know who made it so if any of my readers know, let me know and I will give credit where credit is due. Of course the photos don’t do it justice. The colors and design were breathtaking.</div>

I'm a huge Sandra Dallas fan and who doesn't love getting more fabric!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-mtBenTWtbIE/VH4zZs_zIwI/AAAAAAAAKRg/clQtko1hDGo/s1600-h/gift%252520from%252520julie%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="gift from julie" border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Oug6IerjtKA/VH4zaNj7WII/AAAAAAAAKRk/P6zFwx5zXvc/gift%252520from%252520julie_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="306" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="gift from julie" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Julie’s blog is always interesting. You can read it at <a href="https://www.blogger.com/juliekquilts.blogspot.com">juliekquilts</a>. I don’t know her personally although we have been following each others’ blogs for years. We are both members of the <a href="http://www.tvqg.org/">Trinity Valley Quilters’ Guild<span id="goog_917122556"></span><span id="goog_917122557"></span></a>, and we once took a workshop with Kim Diehl and didn’t know that each other was there. A huge missed opportunity to meet.<br />
<br />
Julie is a very productive quilter who loves to use her scraps no matter how big or small. She is the strings princess just after the strings queen, <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/">Bonnie Hunter</a> of course. She also is a nurse at a local hospital. If she’s had a particularly interesting or touching day at work, she will share them in her “Nurse’s Notes” below her quilting blog entries. I love those as much as I do her quilt musings.<br />
<br />
Thanks Julie for this wonderful gift! I hope after the first of the year we will get a chance to finally meet in person.<br />

These are only a few of the quilts from the TVQG show. As usual, there were many fine quilts created by so many exceptionally talented people. Sure glad I'm not a quilt judge. Choices would be almost impossible to make.<br />
<br />
I’ll post some more show photos tomorrow.<br />

This exhibit is still showing at the <a href="http://www.denverartmuseum.org/exhibitions/first-glance-second-look-quilts-denver-art-museum-collection">DAM</a> through
March 15, 2015. If I should made it to Denver before that date, I will surely
stop in to see these great quilts. My favorite in the book is the circa late
1800s house quilt featured on the cover of the book Love that cheddar fabric,
the red and white striped sashing, and the occasional pine tree blocks scattered
in amongt the houses. Furthermore, there are fold out pages to showcase larger
photos of a couple of quilts.<br />
<br />
My latest read was a fiction book entitled <u>The Signature of All Things</u>
written by <a href="http://twobuttons.com/shop/">Elizabeth Gilbert</a>. She is
the author of the very popular book that later became a Julia Roberts movie,
<u>Eat, Pray, Love.</u><br />

<br />
The book is described on her web page as follows:<br />
<blockquote>
<em>Elizabeth Gilbert’s first novel in twelve years is an extraordinary story
of botany, exploration and desire, spanning across much of the 19th century. The
novel follows the fortunes of the brilliant Alma Whittaker (daughter of a bold
and charismatic botanical explorer) as she comes into her own within the world
of plants and science. As Alma’s careful studies of moss take her deeper into
the mysteries of evolution, the man she loves draws her in the opposite
direction—into the realm of the spiritual, the divine and the magical. Alma is a
clear-minded scientist; Ambrose is a Utopian artist. But what unites this couple
is a shared passion for knowing—a desperate need to understand the workings of
this world, and the mechanism behind of all life. The Signature of All Things is
a big novel, about a big century. Exquisitely researched and told at a galloping
pace, this story novel soars across the globe—from London, to Peru, to
Philadelphia, to Tahiti, to Amsterdam and beyond. It is written in the bold,
questing spirit of that singular time. Alma Whittaker is a witness to history,
as well as maker of history herself. She stands on the cusp of the modern, with
one foot still in the Enlightened Age, and she is certain to be loved by readers
across the world.</em></blockquote>
I never would have dreamed that the life of a 19th century botanist could be
so fascinating but it’s the lead character’s development as a child, then young
adult, then older lady that is so fascinating. Once again an old dog learned
some new tricks.<br />
That’s all for now. I need to skim over the photos I’ve downloaded in the
last two months to see if there is anything else that needs to be written
about. I know there is but I have to find it first!<br />
<br />
<br />
May your bobbins always be full,<br />

Here is a recent junk store find, a ”Monnig’s Dry Goods Co. of Fort Worth, Texas” catalogue from 1962.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-xlNXK-v-Y34/U6C4sMgQNGI/AAAAAAAAI8w/-zfsexcokyY/s1600-h/Monnig%252520cover%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Monnig cover" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-KxD8s04IRIY/U6C4s1QfoeI/AAAAAAAAI84/VP2lkU09nbI/Monnig%252520cover_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="400" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Monnig cover" width="311" /></a><br />
<br />
The majority of the catalogue is in black and white. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-h5YJaloDfUM/U6C4tp2He8I/AAAAAAAAI9A/dCWwX_zkOKs/s1600-h/monnig%252520pgs%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="monnig pgs" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-705sxPqDvoM/U6C4uI0Lp-I/AAAAAAAAI9I/6BusZJ0i0Ek/monnig%252520pgs_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="400" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="monnig pgs" width="243" /></a> <br />
<br />
<br />
However a few were in color, including the rick rack and other trims<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-hWP0XJVozR0/U6C4u9vdcKI/AAAAAAAAI9Q/yfeqHEUTmTg/s1600-h/Monnig%252520Trims%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Monnig Trims" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-V9qzeRFo7uQ/U6C4vWG99KI/AAAAAAAAI9Y/dph3g8rlr1Q/Monnig%252520Trims_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="400" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Monnig Trims" width="293" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
and zippers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/--486pgnRM0M/U6C4xOugUXI/AAAAAAAAI9g/oGjoZsXir6M/s1600-h/Monnig%252520zippers%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Monnig zippers" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-PWYJRqB-IcY/U6C4xulR9YI/AAAAAAAAI9o/kJKOLReSaNU/Monnig%252520zippers_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="400" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Monnig zippers" width="263" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The back cover.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-dFMeJk7jl8Y/U6C4yoaa7KI/AAAAAAAAI9w/XOyFGhRtiuw/s1600-h/Monnig%252520back%252520cover%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Monnig back cover" border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-mtcVAe46FzE/U6C4zimPhjI/AAAAAAAAI94/NMqUVrr8Dqs/Monnig%252520back%252520cover_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="400" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Monnig back cover" width="315" /></a><br />
<br />
Sewing supplies were not the only things in the catalogue although it took up about a quarter of the catalogue. They sold a little bit of everything. Bobby pins, pot and pans, baby clothing and accessories, Band Aids, the works.<br />
<br />
It’s lots of fun to browse through the pages and remembering “the good old days.” Baby, we’ve come a long, long way.<br />
<br />

The wild flowers were blooming like crazy, including the prickly pear. Did we stop to take pictures? No!!!!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-pko9K4i-WZQ/U5N_JrGNa5I/AAAAAAAAIzQ/52_X3N-2Jq4/s1600-h/prickly-pear-cactus-plant-with-big-thorns-flowering%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="prickly-pear-cactus-plant-with-big-thorns-flowering" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Vw1IXeUaUyk/U5N_KlKm3mI/AAAAAAAAIzY/eCuO0A0I-vQ/prickly-pear-cactus-plant-with-big-thorns-flowering_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="177" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="prickly-pear-cactus-plant-with-big-thorns-flowering" width="258" /></a><br />
<br />
This is a “public domain” photo I found on the Internet. That’s how they looked.<br />
<br />
We stayed overnight in <a href="http://www.burnet-tx.com/">Burnet, Texas</a> and spent a lot of time antique/junk shopping. Here are a few of the interesting things we saw at the <a href="http://www.burnetantiquemall.com/">Burnet Antique Mall</a>. This is one of my favorite antique malls of all time!<br />
<br />

<br />
I’ll write more about this trip in my next blog post. Until then, put the peddle to the metal and keep on sewing.<br />

There was another indoor flea market that we managed to shop a store called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheKnotHoleMoreIndoorFleaMarket?rf=120110834672866">The Knot Hole</a>.<br />
We bought lots and lots of colored glass to make garden totems like these I found on a Google Photo Search:<br />
<br />

<br />
We haven’t started creating yet because we are in the midst of closing out the estate of Sweetie’s parents, clearing out the household and putting the house on the market. When we finally DO get a totem together, I will share a picture. I’m sure we will learn from quite a few mistakes on the first couple of tries. Just like making quilts.<br />
<br />
Gotta go now. <br />

<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-MyzWzFl_P_c/U5M6R0p9HhI/AAAAAAAAIyU/d9Kq5cYlG-s/s1600-h/DSCN2046%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSCN2046" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/--Vk2DJHxgJE/U5M6Sh-XwyI/AAAAAAAAIyc/BBnqrSV0z6E/DSCN2046_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="400" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="DSCN2046" width="267" /></a><br />
<br />
And I do mean a very pink quilt! This is a baby gift for my grand-niece Henlee who is over 3 months old now. I’m down to my least favorite part of the process, machine quilting. I’m just doing a grid because I haven’t practiced enough to do free-motion quilting. I’m hoping to finish it before she turns 4 months old.<br />
<br />
Hoping!!!!!<br />

<br />
<img height="400" src="https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/10308803_512187852236872_6450795119497246617_n.jpg" width="301" /><em>Photo courtesy of Trinity Valley Quilter’s Guild</em><br />
<div align="center">
<em><br /></em></div>
Kim’s books are truly my favorites. I have every one she’s written so far except the most recent one which I plan to purchase soon. I resisted the urge to take my other 6 of her books for autographing. Thought it would be a bit too much so I settled for the one this quilt pattern is in.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-g7o0CmKipMo/U3zV4KbBeOI/AAAAAAAAIfo/sRfw1AwKWIk/s1600-h/DSCN2041%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSCN2041" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-NTOfAjQ04CU/U3zV5SVdRuI/AAAAAAAAIfw/mrIlU8Hsv0s/DSCN2041_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="241" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="DSCN2041" width="313" /></a><br />
<br />
She is as cute as her quilt designs. And a patient, attentive teacher.<br />
<br />
This is the quilt we worked on. The pattern is called “Mocha Stars” and is found in her <strong>Simple Comforts</strong> book. We had so much fun! Learned new invisible applique techniques, stem making tips, etc., etc. …..<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ga6DZzbQrEg/U3zV6da2VwI/AAAAAAAAIf4/68Q9-GlSFg8/s1600-h/DSCN2036%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSCN2036" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-P_8iB1HCeFo/U3zV6-9xVkI/AAAAAAAAIf8/iryPEfPD-P0/DSCN2036_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="298" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="DSCN2036" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
This is my progress. First time I've used batiks with my other fabrics.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XgFNb7_0kRw/U3zV71yAfAI/AAAAAAAAIgI/8KTutEffnkw/s1600-h/My%252520star%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="My star" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-s2tlkLhh1-c/U3zV8UGBsdI/AAAAAAAAIgQ/kxrsUE0VPF0/My%252520star_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="290" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="My star" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
After I zigzag around the star points and make a few more leaves, stems and some flowers, I can sew the halves together to make this into a pillow rather than a quilt. <br />
<br />
Unfortunately I was unable to attend the guild meeting the following day but have seen pictures of her trunk show. All beautiful.<br />
<br />
A few years ago I met one of my other quilt heroes, <a href="http://jomortonquilts.com/">Jo Morton</a>, at one of her needle-turn applique workshops. Now I want to meet <a href="http://laundrybasketquilts.com/Edyta/edytaindex.htm">Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts</a>. Someday!!!!! Somehow!!!!!<br />
<br />
<br />
Until next time, may your bobbins always be full.<br />

lovely fabric from the Quiltmaker magazine blog, <a href="http://www.quiltmaker.com/blogs/quiltypleasures/">Quilty
Pleasures</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rB6tRdQHL4M/U07zhKSc9FI/AAAAAAAAIQs/tTF2p-8aNx4/s1600/won+from+quilty.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rB6tRdQHL4M/U07zhKSc9FI/AAAAAAAAIQs/tTF2p-8aNx4/s1600/won+from+quilty.JPG" height="320" width="254" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The fabric colors and the book are so in tune with my personal taste so I
like them a lot.<br />
<br />
Then the next week my Sweetie texted me from an antique store in Brownwood
with a picture of four feedsack fabrics. Yes, buy them I texted back. I am really
crazy about this turquoise and brown one, and<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WenSRjUJqSE/U07z5-XmorI/AAAAAAAAIQ0/HSflJik6kzI/s1600/feedsack+brown+turq.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WenSRjUJqSE/U07z5-XmorI/AAAAAAAAIQ0/HSflJik6kzI/s1600/feedsack+brown+turq.JPG" height="219" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
also the abstract purple, violet and brown one on the left here.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T_k0aQB5wao/U070CzUMpWI/AAAAAAAAIQ8/tVcTrr-kdEE/s1600/feedsacks+blues.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T_k0aQB5wao/U070CzUMpWI/AAAAAAAAIQ8/tVcTrr-kdEE/s1600/feedsacks+blues.JPG" height="185" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The blue and red on the right reminds me of an EKG print out with all it’s
squiggly lines.<br />
<br />
I don’t cut or use the feedsacks. I just collect them because it reminds me
of my dear Granny who died when I was in the second grade. She always made sure that Granddad bought feedsacks with the same
cloth bag design so she could make complete skirts, dresses, or shirts on her treadle sewing machine.<br />
<br />
<br />
That's all for now . . .<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1lLuZi8Xkis/U070EbakxdI/AAAAAAAAIRE/iIqMZSHCtys/s1600/a+red+Signature.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1lLuZi8Xkis/U070EbakxdI/AAAAAAAAIRE/iIqMZSHCtys/s1600/a+red+Signature.png" /></a><br />

It was just so busy and crowded there was just no way to do it without being in someone’s way. However, I bought the cutest little dirty clothes bag that you see below. It is embroidery on white fabric with the flower petals painted lilac.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-QGoBrzpm3pk/UytPZi_eySI/AAAAAAAAIII/Z5OK0k6N4wE/s1600-h/full2.jpg"><img alt="full" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Pvyw9VvwDZA/UytPaZJchtI/AAAAAAAAIIQ/FZH-f9uGi8I/full_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="400" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="full" width="303" /></a><br />
<br />
There are little pockets at the top, one for dirty hankies and the other for dirty socks, then the slit midway down lined with green bias tape is the place to insert all the other dirties. It measures 21” x 26”. It wouldn't hold many of my dirty clothes that's for sure. Especially sweat pants!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-4_3lzu3KsZM/UytPbf9CxjI/AAAAAAAAIIY/5ymccWwvwVg/s1600-h/face2.jpg"><img alt="face" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-1RpeubbSnzM/UytPb25RggI/AAAAAAAAIIc/H58408RwHyI/face_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="316" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="face" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
It was the lady’s face, surrounded by purple flowers and green leaves that really caught my eye. Her capped black hair and alluring face just grabbed me. I don’t know when it was made but my guess is in the 1930s or 40s. She is currently hanging on my design board in the sewing room so I can admire her before she’s folded up and put away with the rest of my collected linens.<br />
<br />
This framed embroidered and appliqued pillowcase from the 1920s or 30s is displayed everyday in my bedroom.<br />
<br />

<br />
It was made by one of my great grandmothers and is a cherished possession to me.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Close Up</td></tr>

<br />

That’s all for now, but I have more LaGrange trip stuff for you next time. Until then, may your bobbin always be full.<br />

Even if I’m not Irish, I like St. Patrick’s Day. It’s the one day that a Scottish/English gal like me can pretend for the sake of my Irish husband.<br />

In addition to the Lone Star Quilt Study Group gathering there was “The Best Little Quilt Show in Texas” going on just adjacent to the Hall where me met. <br />
<div align="center">
<img src="http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mOteLtI-Msc-0Kc2vYLQfIg.jpg" height="308" width="320" /></div>
For those of you who haven't seen the Dolly Parton movie many years ago or who aren't from Texas, the quilt show title origin is unknown. If “Quilt Show” is replaced by “Whorehouse” you are in on the joke. LaGrange is famous or infamous considering how you look at it for having a brothel called “the Chicken Ranch” where men from miles around would visit when that got that “itch.” It was operational from 1905-1973. That’s all I’m saying about that!<br />
<br />
The quilt show was fun and the guild members running it were so friendly. This is a little taste of some of the quilts we saw there. But first, I may not have all the information about the quilt title or who made it because most of my pictures of the signs were blurry. I like to give credit where credit is due so I’ll do my best to identify each one.<br />

Dated 1844 with signatures from numerous people that appear to be from New Jersey, including the name in the middle, Sarah V.C. Quick. With some help from Karen Bresenhan and Nancy Puentes, co-founders of the Texas Quilt Museum, this quilt was purchased for the University of Texas at Austin Briscoe Center for American History’s Quilt Collection to preserve and study this amazing quilt. You can see photos of some of the other quilts in their quilt collection <a href="http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/dmr_result.php?search=winedale+quilt+collection">HERE</a>.<br />

<br />
The handwork is so tiny and precise. It can’t be seen with the naked eye, even on the small pin-width stems.<br />

<br />
An added bonus is the series of Chinese scenes stitched on each corner.<br />

<br />
The broderie perse border add a nice, unusual touch.<br />
<br />
The Quick quilt is back at the University of Texas with Ms. Adams for further study. However, at some point in the future it will be displayed again. Hope you get to see it in person, but in the meantime, enjoy the pictures.<br />

The speaker was Rosie de Leon-McCrady of Austin on the subject of vintage/antique quilts and other fabric items containing redwork. Rosie’s redwork webpage can be seen <a href="http://www.redworkplus.com/">HERE.</a><br />

I met some very nice ladies at my table, Libby and Barbara from Arlington, Texas and Sylvia from Canton. Sylvia had on the cutest blouse that had a old embroidered dresser scarf along the yoke and lapped over her shoulders to the front with smaller matching motifs. It was a winner!<br />

The next Lone Star Quilt Study Group meeting is set for August 23, 2014 at The Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas to study Texas Republic era quilts led by Marcia Kaylakie. If you are interested in attending you may find the registration information <a href="http://www.lonestarquiltstudygroup.org/Study_Days.html">HERE.</a> I’m really jazzed about this one!<br />
<br />
There is more to come about our LaGrange trip, including the "Best Little Quilt Show in Texas," a very old historic cemetery and a visit to the Texas Quilt Museum so stay tuned.<br />

It’s on the design board all pretty in pink and white. These blocks were made several years ago from a <a href="http://cabbagerosequilting.com/">Cabbage Rose Quilt Shop</a>. I just knew that some day someone would have a little girl who needs a pink quilt.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-PU8cbzaHCVw/UwdjZuXeR0I/AAAAAAAAH0U/kBnVOtQaBNs/s1600-h/henlee-quilt-layout2.jpg"><img alt="henlee quilt layout" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-oasw5y5ZtmM/UwdjaGVdBxI/AAAAAAAAH0Y/C6f60mPHYCM/henlee-quilt-layout_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="240" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="henlee quilt layout" width="179" /></a><br />
<br />
I’ve been finishing up a few blocks from Bonnie Hunter’s last quilt along, Celtic Solstice. I decided not to make a full quilt, but a smaller one that could serve as a wall hanging or table topper. Two more star blocks to go.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kL2ClGRhK2Y/Uwdja-bFvyI/AAAAAAAAH0k/fXS10Jvyito/s1600-h/celtic-solstice-update2.jpg"><img alt="celtic solstice update" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-wJ1ALGXiotc/UwdjbR-ydNI/AAAAAAAAH0o/4JoDzaGKqQs/celtic-solstice-update_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="176" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="celtic solstice update" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
On my birthday, my dear friend Charlotte sent me the sweetest card with some darling fabric (I think fat-eights) inserted. She folded it so cute. It looks like an envelope to me. Cute idea!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-_8Pen_HZ488/Uwdjcfu5oII/AAAAAAAAH00/0YjPl_QyFfw/s1600-h/fabric-from-charlotte2.jpg"><img alt="fabric from charlotte" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-eiAdgsRnH8E/Uwdjc6fa8AI/AAAAAAAAH04/CabEhsOvv4E/fabric-from-charlotte_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="172" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="fabric from charlotte" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
My sewing room has been a mess due to the three projects going at one time. Since I’m mostly a scrappy quilt-maker, there is fabric stacked in piles onto every flat surface available. I started cleaning up, putting away, and digging out last week but only got one area cleaned up – the cutting table. There are two other areas I need to get to – pronto! Ironing board and one end of my sewing machine table.<br />
<br />
Guess that’s all for now. May your bobbins always be full,<br />

December and January were rough months for my family. My dear father-in-law passed away January 4th due to complications from pneumonia and cancer. He was 88 years old.<br />

I hope to get back to a more regular blog posting schedule. Until next time, may your bobbins always be full.<br />

You can see her CS quilt <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2014/01/happy-new-year-2014-surprise-reveal.html">HERE</a>. Based on her instructions, I laid out six blocks on my design wall to determine if I should go further.<br />
<br />

<br />
It looks pretty good although this photo is a little darker than the actual blocks. This is the scrappiest quilt I’ve made in a very long time. Some of my yellows need to be a lighter shade so it can be contrasted more against the red I see.<br />
<br />
Should I make more blocks and finish a small-sized CS quilt or should I just set these parts aside to use for another project? I would need to make the parts to complete about 50 more blocks. I would like to know your opinion.<br />
<br />
Thanks a million.<br />

His father was hospitalized with pneumonia the day after Thanksgiving. Since then he has had several set backs and still is not home. The rehab hospital will take over in the next few days so please keep us in your thoughts.<br />
Please join these pugs and me in ringing in the new year.<br />

May there be more sewing, good health, and good times in 2014. Look at it this way:<br />

The clues may be found on her blog <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2013/12/celtic-solstice-part-5.html">HERE.</a> We are working on Clue #5, split triangle units using some of the triangle units already completed in Clue #3 with additional triangle units from this newest clue. <br />
These are 12 of the split triangle units I’ve completed last night<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-_hvRcZVu-q0/UsGuwniDaFI/AAAAAAAAHsM/ZfHH8r2jTM0/s1600-h/Clue-5-Celtic-Solstice2.jpg"><img alt="Clue 5 Celtic Solstice" border="0" height="218" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-HuA3LKbB4sM/UsGuxj_iI_I/AAAAAAAAHsQ/Rw7hGjaQyDU/Clue-5-Celtic-Solstice_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Clue 5 Celtic Solstice" width="240" /></a><br />
and an additional six this morning.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ADz9NjvDTd8/UsGuymFw_WI/AAAAAAAAHsc/H91U9nptIJM/s1600-h/Clue%2525205%252520more%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Clue 5 more" border="0" height="174" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-NAm2g53MvMQ/UsGuzE0vK4I/AAAAAAAAHsg/TYIAHbZcWUY/Clue%2525205%252520more_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Clue 5 more" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
There are more cut triangle pieces in my tray on the right with the completed HSTs in the blue baske ton the left.. I truly used pieces of scraps in all of my blocks so far with just a few fat quarter parts thrown in. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-1ZuUxNN1uWY/UsGuz_vW_BI/AAAAAAAAHss/SlvbJlCfWMM/s1600-h/Clue-5-cut-pieces2.jpg"><img alt="Clue 5 cut pieces" border="0" height="182" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-l1MzXPqIKb4/UsGu0seoueI/AAAAAAAAHsw/jtX6s5im5pg/Clue-5-cut-pieces_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Clue 5 cut pieces" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
The chain piecing of the triangle square units makes it smooth and fast. The one thing I like to do however is to sew them in sections so that after I have assembled 10 or 12, or 20 units, I stop and iron them. Stepping back and looking at the finished groups always give me a sense of satisfaction that the assembled parts are actually blocks. Then I make another group, and on and on.<br />
<br />
It seems that I don’t have as many black scraps or fat quarters that are large enough to cut 3 7/8 square inches so I’ll have to dig through my fabric closet, Jo Morton Collection, and maybe visit a fabric store to get more variety.<br />
<br />
Of course, Ranger the Maine Coon Cat was a big help during this sewing project.<br />

<br />
He slept through the whole thing. Twice. Couldn't have done it without him.<br />
<br />
With this blog entry I am linking up with Bonnie’s blog to share my photos. I suggest you visit her <strong>linky page</strong> to see all the beautiful fabric and color combinations that are assembled there. Simply gorgeous.<br />
It’s not too late to join in on the fun. Just jump in.<br />
