THE HOT AS H*LL IN JULY GIVEAWAY WINNER AND CIVIL WAR QUILT BLOCKS

Pat, your number won THE GOODBYE QUILT book.  Looking forward to receiving your mailing address so it can be mailed to you.  Thanks to all who left a comment for this drawing.

I have two Brackman’s Civil War Quilt blocks to show this time.  I didn’t work on last week’s block because I was machine quilting the red and white quilt.  Once the quilting project was finished, I began working on the blocks for the Civil War Quilt.

Block #29, Railroad Crossing, has a little problem.  It went together beautifully – all the measurements worked – except that it finished a perfect 8 3/4” instead of 8 1/2”.  I’ve not decided yet whether to re-make  it with slightly larger than a 1/4” seam allowance or just to let it go.  I like the way it turned out so if I do remake it, I will use the same fabric choices.

Block No. 30, Peterson’s Star and Stripes was easy to put together because I am machine appliqueing the star.  I did, however, have to draft a star in my computer Paint program because the link to the star pattern in the Peterson's Star post sent me somewhere besides a star pattern.    Otherwise, this block is a piece of cake.

That’s all for now.

  2. I like the star fabric, looks great!! And I'm always a little bit nervous when I measure the pieced block whether it's ending up 8 1/2 or not.... Some blocks didn't...

  4. Hi Donna , mine came out a little big too, i added larger corner triangles, taking the seam allowance at 5/8 and then trimmed back to the 8 1/2 inches

  5. Donna both your blocks are wonderful! Just a little hint, if your Railroad Crossing is just a tag too big, gently unstitch the corner triangles, then you can trim the block sides the 1/8th off each side, then resew the corner triangles on again. Once they are sewn back on, you can just do a quick trim of the corners!! When I made this block I did it that way. It should work for you!!! It will save you having to redo the whole thing again!!

  6. Great blocks Donna, love your fabric choices and I like the star shape you chose. Everyone has posted about RR crossing block coming out too big. Good tip Merilyn, thanks.

  7. I'm a bit late catching up in blogland .... but I wanted to say that your blocks look fabulous!
Your RR Crossing block is beautiful! You could always keep it "as is" and adjust the sashing strips around this one when you begin sewing the quilt together. Your applique' block is equally as lovely!
