What I’m “Reading”

My most recent “read” was a novel by Amy Tan called The Bonesetter’s Daughter.

Bonesetters Daughter

You wonder why I put the word reading in quotations marks?  Because I downloaded the audiobook from my local public library onto my MP3 player.  Free of charge!  The book is checked out to me under my library card number for three weeks.  After that three week period expires, so does the book on the MP3 player.

This book really touched me.  The sadness and pain carried from generation to generation of women, from China, to Hong Kong, to America saddened me, but there were triumphs as well.  If you like The Joy Luck Club by the same author, you will enjoy this novel.  Being immersed for several hours in a different culture than one’s own really stimulates the soul.

Currently I’m listening to a novel by E.L. Doctorow called Homer and Langley.  I haven’t read Doctorow in a number of years but watching an adaptation of his novel, Billy Bathgate, on cable television earlier in the week prompted me to see what else he had written that I hadn’t read.  So far, so good.

I checked this one out from the library as well.   The best part is that it won’t be turned in late so I do away with late fees.   Isn’t technology wonderful?

  1. Donna, I will have to check into those two books. I also download books to my computer and listen while I am sewing. I am so glad that the libraries in North Texas are doing this. I have a Nook Color and I can download to it also.

  4. I love Amy Tan...one of my favorites! I'm glad you got to get Harriet's second day this time...I heard from some who had done both that she was even better this time!
