ILLINOIS ROADS CIVIL WAR QUILT BLOCK OF WEEK

Block #23 of Brackman’s Civil War Quilt 2011 is called Illinois Roads.  I took advantage of the blue, red and white stripe fabric from my “Resource Center” to make this very simple block look more dramatic than it actually is.

23 Illinois Roads

Since block #22 had lots of pieces to put together, intersections to match, and multiple points to protect from disappearing, it is my theory that Ms. Brackman took pity on us with block #23 with larger, simpler pieces, no points, nothing fancy.  Hardly any pinning on this week's project.

Several weeks (or is it months) ago I saw a block somewhere in a magazine or catalogue that caught my attention.  It is the same as the Illinois Roads block except for the placement of the darks and lights within the block.  I made a test block, took a photo, and created a layout that shows how it would look with the this color placement.  To me it looks like stairs or lightening.  By the way, disregard the vertical white lines between columns that you see in the picture below.

Very simple but dramatic.

  1. When a block such as this only has two fabric options, it can be a challenge to chose!!! You have done well, it looks great!!!
