SOUTHERN QUILTS: SURVIVING RELICS OF THE CIVIL WAR

IMG

Over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, I read this book from cover to cover.  It’s written by Bets Ramsey and Merikay Waldvogel then published in 1989.  I had this book on my Amazon Wish List for several years in an effort to find a copy that sells for less than the $45 price tag it had been when I first started looking.  Finally in 2012 I found a copy for $21.00 that included the shipping fee.  I ordered it right away.

My favorite story in the book was about the Cave Hill Farm Quilt – a pink, blue and white Feathered Star.  A Confederate soldier approached a farm house while on the run from a Union prison.  Two young ladies gave him food, a lamp and this quilt.  The soldier was instructed to hide in a cave located on the farm property.

They never saw him again and the girls wondered about the quilt they loaned him.  Long after the war ended some boys explored the cave and found the quilt, much the worse for wear.  When the boys showed the girls the quilt they discovered it was the quilt they loaned that soldier.  To see the quilt and the condition of it visit The Quilt Index HERE.

There are many more personal stories about quilts and the people they touched in this book.  I highly recommend it.

When I get my pictures organized I will post about my birthday weekend at the Jefferson, Texas quilt show. Until then, keep on stitching.
